About our Highland hideaway

We don't just work here... we live here and we love it here! A friendly welcoming spirit runs in the family. It's difficult for us to be anything but amiable - stress just melts away in Glen Dochart!

Pictures of the estate all year round

'Portnellan' is a corruption of the Gaelic 'port nan eillan', meaning 'port of the island'. It was once the ferry point for the castle on the island of Loch Dochart. That was back in Campbell times, when the Campbells were able to boast they could walk from one side of Scotland to the other without leaving their own land.

Glen Dochart once belonged to a Campbell called Black Duncan of the Cowl. He was also known as Duncan of the Castles because he built so many of them - including our own here on Loch Dochart. The island on which it's built, Eillan Iubhair (Ewar), has its own place in mythology - read the story here.

Portnellan House was built in the nineteenth century as a shooting lodge for the Marquis of Breadalbane. It later became a farm and then a guest house. The first lodge was built on the estate in 1980. Since then the estate has been run as a family business, gradually building a reputation for our warm Highland welcome, luxury accommodation and convenient location.

The current proprietor, Cameron Taylor, has spent most of his life in Glen Dochart. He's proud of the estate's reputation and invites you to put us to the test!
